A native of Sri Lanka, I’ve not only lived there but also in Hong Kong, Pakistan and India, before settling in Canada, which is now my home. This exposure to different cultures at an early age came with both benefits and challenges; tremendous learning yet a familiarity with the discomfort of always being on the outside looking in. No doubt, I’ve picked up quite a few stories along the way, along with a deep interest in people and building relationships.
This has certainly spilled over into my professional life. I currently work in public relations for Toronto-based agency Environics Communications. As a Consultant in the Corporate and Financial practice, my work is all about creating content and communicating important and often complex information to the public in interesting and effective ways. For the past three years, I have also been an active volunteer with not-for-profit organization Sri Lankans Without Borders (SLWB) and currently serve as the group’s Director of Community Engagement. I’ve found volunteerism to be extremely rewarding, particularly since SLWB’s primary mission is to bring different ethnicities and communities together, to connect and spark dialogue with one another.
Maya Angelou once wrote that there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you; people often ask me what it is I do— I’d best describe this as “story-teller."
