Day 121: Why I LOVE Mineral Makeup

by Sarah Devika Sumnauth

I love mineral makeup! I do. I think by this point its pretty safe to assume but I would just like to take a moment to reiterate the finer points.

I love mineral makeup because of how it wears. Over the years I’ve worn many conventional brands, that don’t list their ingredients, that lay heavy on the skin and clog your pores with breakouts to match.
Mineral makeup doesn’t do that.
Knowing what goes into a product is so important to me.  I want my makeup to obviously look great but also feel great and have medicinal properties so that if your skin is doing something you don’t want it to do, than it can be corrected.  As I work more and more with all sorts of green body care products at Whole Foods, it becomes increasingly apparent that people everywhere are becoming more conscious of what is going onto their bodies and into them.  This has made a huge impact on me and Urban Minerals.
Through my research, I’ve learned a ton about Silica for example, a mineral that we all have in our bones, hair, teeth, nails and skin - and when used on the skin it has been known to significantly reduce acne, over oiliness and the look of wrinkles and pores.  It’s what you would call a natural filler but it also has the medicinal clout to be thought of as a healing ingredient.  If you’re body becomes Silica deficient, through not eating enough of the right foods (think celery, peppers, beets, unrefined grains, carrots & potatoes) you’re body will naturally resort to the easiest source to mine for this mineral and generally speaking it starts in the easiest places first - your skin, hair, nails and bones.  It’s a slippery slope and I always encourage a proper, rounded diet, but having Silica for topical use is a great way to give your body what it needs to keep the beautifying parts of your body working optimally. Bonus!

I love mineral makeup because it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing anything on your skin.  You apply it once, and for the majority of the day it stays put and gives your skin a wonderfully refined look.  You can reapply if you need more coverage, but I would like to have my formula be easily blendable and give great coverage without feeling heavy.  As soon as I switched to a mineral makeup brand, I immediately felt freer.  I knew I was getting the coverage I wanted, with the staying power I needed and good quality ingredients plus I could actually move my face and feel like myself.

I love mineral makeup because It has every potential to be Eco-friendly.  From the way I want to source my minerals, to how they are processed, what organic ingredients I choose to mix with right down to my packaging, everything can be done equitably and sustainably and let me just add, fabulously. Let’s not forget that it’s still makeup and I want it to appeal to you.

I think this whole process has made me fall in love with mineral makeup many times over and my business structure too - two key components to having a successful business - love your product and love your business structure.

Because I can see into the future or what I would like my future to look like, I know that if I continue to communicate why I think organic mineral makeup is fabulous then there’s no reason why it won’t spread the love to people who are using conventional brands to their own dissatisfaction.  I’m not here to get down on other companies, I just want to encourage better, smarter, more informed choices in women and men of all types.
