Day 99: You’re Uncommonly Beautiful
So the first thing I come across today on my morning email and social media perusal is this video, “On Real Beauty”, on my favourite viral video news site, Upworthy. Please watch and feel your heart grow 10x.
So now, how do you feel? Beautiful? Confident? Like you have a wider perspective?
I thought so.
This video just about warms my heart to 1000 degrees because it is so in alignment with what I believe, what I am doing here at Urban Minerals and also just goes to show that there are many conscious women out there, working towards the same ends.
I strong believe that recognizing that we all possess the same beauty but manifested in different ways is essential to getting down to the roots of those things that make you feel not so great. It’s an interesting concept when one really breaks it down, how vigilant women are about denying their own beauty. I think that fact coupled with the media’s consistent barrage of unrealistic norms refutes our own inner knowing and just strengthens our inner critic.
But as time will tell, working towards what you think the world should look and feel like is the only way to get things to change.
So let me break it down for you.
In her video, Ms. Karen Walrond shares her top 10 reasons why everyone should know that they’re beautiful. She says:
1) Remember there are differences, but there are no flaws.
2) There’s only one fashion rule: if it makes you feel awesome, wear it.
3) Be willing to be vulnerable, so you can also fully experience joy.
4) Control your own perspective. Perspective is everything.
5) Another word for sexy? Confident.
6) Breathe. Deeply and every day.
7) Express yourself. Often, kindly and without apology.
8) The adventure is in the attempt. Embrace possibility.
9) To remain youthful, never stop looking for the wonderful.
10) And finally: create your own story. Never let others create it for you.
I think I fell more in love with myself as the video progressed, the beautiful pictures kept coming and the music swept me up (I love me some instrumental Hip Hop jazz.) I identify with and strongly believe in each of her statements because I think that they resonate with all the different aspects of myself, and for all the right reasons.
As for how this plays into my concept of beauty, well, it’s literally the same thing as Green Beauty. It’s a recognition that those differences that in one stroke could separate us, also in another stroke can strengthen us and elevate us. That knowing yourself and believing in yourself is the sexiest thing about you. The extra step that I believe in is that we, all of us, women, should be catering to those individualities, those differences, in a holistic approach to beauty care and the environment around you. Your beauty is organic, because it comes from within and the way you treat yourself, the products you use and the outcome you derive, well that also starts from within too.
People like Karen Walrond, make me feel like what I’m working towards, here at Urban Minerals with Organic Mineral Foundation for women of ALL colours, isn’t in vain. Seeing the same amount of determination in another is wonderful and the fact that she is also a woman of colour, hailing from the Caribbean, well that’s just icing on top of the multicultural cupcake.
And to end things off nicely, she gives us a reminder.
“…Because no matter what anyone says, there is an underlying truth: You are different. And you’re beautiful. “
